The University of Helsinki is the biggest university in Finland with enrolment of nearly 38000 students and offering instruction in some 380 subjects or degree programmes in its 11 faculties and a number of independent institutes. The Department of Physics has five subject areas with programmes up to the doctoral level and with about 60 person faculty,Over the decade the department has been a member in the networks EUPEN along with STEPS and STEPS TWO and also in the Tuning projects.
